Gundam Battle Royale

Gundam Battle Royale (here on known as - GBR) is a great 3rd person action game that is a very easy game to get into. So much so, that children can even pick it up and start playing (that was the case for my 5 year old cousin at least).

GBR brings all the innovations of of the original Gundam Battle Tactics and builds on that. What you have in GBR then is a added space levels, new Mobile suits, and different mission types. All in all it makes for great fun. The multiplayer mode is also great fun, and good to take advantage of with your friends.

That said, lets move on to the review

The are pretty much flawless for the style. Everything looks exactly how it is supposed to. The mobile suits look how they should, down to the over-sized flared leggings. The landscape is excellent too. While it does look excellent, it doesnt push the boundaries for graphics on the PSP (like the Monster hunter series

The audio for this game is spot on. Thruster sounds are where they should be. Machine guns and lazer swords sound as the should when slicing through the opposition. The soundtrack is typical gundam style with various action sounds taken from the series, as well as cameo dialogue done by pilots from the series. All in all, you wont be disappointed here.

The gameplay is simple and very intuitive. If you want to move left, you press left. If you want to move quickly left, you double press left and thrusters will kick in to get you there faster. Lock-on also makes life a lot easier for when you are strafing. The only complaint people might have here is that some of the robots feel a tad mechanical…for those that would say that, it might be a thought to consider what it is you are actually controlling. Everything handles exactly like it is supposed to. Better machines move more smoothly and as you unlock more and more suits, you will see the difference. It is all done very well. The experience point system also works well so that the player can upgrade the machines for harder missions. This adds to the longevity of the game.

As mentioned earlier my five year old cousin picked this up and inside of a minute had it figured out. While he didnt know the weapons switches of the more complicated machine, it doesnt take long to figure out how to play. Its all very intuitive and the game leads the player in slowly so they don’t feel overwhelmed like with other series

This game will take a good portion of your time once you get into it. Some of the battles will drive you nuts, but the experience point system works well to help the player get more points to be able to overcome some of the bigger obstacles. There are also so many missions and unlockable suits, that the player will be with the game for quite a while. This will definately take much longer than the original GBT game. I finished the original in about 8 hours, this one took well over 30 hours to have all four mission types done. If you get into this, you will have a ball.

While the game is great, it is clear its not perfect. It doesnt push the boundaries of graphics as much as other game series, and the music isnt as memorable as with other series either. That said, nothing can be taken away from this, it is a gem, and will be enjoyed by anyone who is into robots in general or a hardcore gundam fan.
