Medal of Honor Heroes 2

medal-of-honor-heroes2.jpg

In Heroes 2 you assume the role of an OSS operative assigned to find out (not surprisingly) what the Germans are upto. After the Germans dropped the V1 bomb on London the allies fear that the Nazis are planning something bigger which might even include the use of nuclear weapons. Therefore, you are deployed in Northern France to investigate what’s going on in that part of the country.

The game is divided into seven big areas which are further divided into smaller levels. In each level you have to travel from point A to point B while completing various main objectives which usually involve sabotaging and blowing things up such as AA guns and U-boats etc. Besides main objectives you also have secondary objectives which aren’t always described to you thus you have to find them as you go on with our main mission. For example at the start of the mission you will be told to look out for safes that might contain useful information and Nazi cars or you might see a gun emplacement and once you mount on it, the secondary objective starts which tasks you with killing the German advance with the mounted gun.

What makes the single player campaign so much fun in Heroes 2 is the intensity that you will experience in each level. While going from start to finish during the campaign, besides using your guns you will get to use mortar canons, MG-42 emplacements, huge artillery guns and rocket launchers to fight off the Germans. Not to mention that you will be blowing stuff on your way and this makes it even more fun. The only thing missing from the game are vehicle sequences. If EA had added some vehicles, that would have made this the best shooter on the PSP gameplay wise.

The intense gameplay is complimented by a control scheme that suits the game perfectly. You move around with the analog stick and move around using the face buttons. The R shoulder button is used to fire while the L shoulder button is used to use the gun sight of the weapons for better aiming. You might think that having fewer buttons you won’t be able to do perform certain actions on the PSP but that is where you would be wrong. You can run, lean, toss back grenades and do everything else that you can do on a console or PC FPS thanks to the great and easy controls.

In the game you can only carry two weapons and a pack of grenades with you. Arsenal in the game includes the various guns that have become standard issue with the MoH series; The MP-40, Thomson, Bar Rifle, Springfield Sniper Rifle and the Bazooka to name a few. Interestingly, enemies in the game tend to drop ammo for the guns that you might be using no matter whichever guns they might be using which makes ammo abundant in each level of the game. Undoubtedly, the sniper rifles are the most fun to use in the game as you can pick off enemy soldiers from a distance and taking out two soldiers with the same bullet can be even more satisfying.

There is no health bar or meter in the game, instead, Heroes 2 uses the alternative that has become quite famous with FPSes these days. As you start taking damage the screen starts turning red, after taking damage for a while the screen stops turning red and you start hearing your heart beat at a very fast rate. If you take further hits you die but if you hide in a corner for a few seconds the beating stops and the screen color returns to normal.

The graphics of the game are also what you might have come to expect from a WWII shooter these days. You will see craters in the roads, destroyed buildings as you make your way across the city, come across farmhouses and barns while running in the countryside (almost every WWII game has some countryside areas), enter buildings with broken doors and wall (with lots of furniture added for good measure) and other usual stuff. The graphics in the game are quite good with bullets making holes in walls, doors and anything else they might hit being the best and most impressive effect.

The story of the game unfolds in front of you in the form of comic book style stills (with a little animation) which look very slick.

The audio of the game is also quite impressive. The guns in the game are quite loud which as I always say is good to hear in a FPS. You will get to hear a few musical notes here and there which fit the mood of the game nicely. And you will also hear soldiers talking to each other when engaged in battle. When a grenade blows up near you not only does the screen turn red but your ears start ringing in the game which is also a very nice effect. The voice acting done in the pre-mission briefings is also quite decent.

Unfortunately, The AI in game whether enemy or friendly isn’t well, intelligent. Not only is the AI dumb but it is also quite unpredictable. In one instance, you might be standing besides the enemy soldier and he won’t shoot at you while in another instance you might be at a distance and enemy soldiers will start shooting at you and not only shoot at you but hit you also and the same goes for your companions too. In most of the missions you have two computer controlled soldiers fighting alongside you, but, their behavior is also unstable and you can’t always rely on them to provide you cover or save you in heated situations. It would have been nice if you could give some basic commands to your comrades such as “attack”,”defend” or “move” but sadly you can’t.

The single player campaign can be blasted through in five or six hours after which you can turn your attention towards the multiplayer aspect of the game. Heroes 2 supports 32 players online as compared to a mere 8 in the last game.

MoH: Heroes 2 isn’t a ground breaking or revolutionary shooter but what it is is a fast and fun shooter. If you like to play FPSs on your PSP then be sure to get thesr free download offer, this one out and if you haven’t yet played an FPS on your PSP then Heroes 2 seems like a nice place to start.
