You can ski or snowboard yourself into stardom in SSX On Tour. The game includes 12 levels for racing and performing stunts. You can earn yourself a spot on the professional tour by winning events and improving your skills. Your success moves you up the rankings until you can call yourself the best on the mountain. This version of SSX features new graphical effects and controller feedback designed to capture the speed of your races and the massive air of your tricks. SSX On Tour also includes new music, art, and characters.
SSX is a prolific and fantastic franchise; spawning four games and completely re-inventing the snowboarding genre. Mix unrealistic tricks, incredible music, and unquestionably cool style, and you’ve got a series that keeps getting better and better.
And On Tour may be the best yet, even on the PSP.
SSX On Tour for the PSP is pretty much unlike anything else on the PSP and that’s a good thing. Never before has a handheld game looked this good… On Tour matches its console counterparts where it counts. The game’s style is a pencil-and-paper Rock and Roll extravaganza unlike anything you’ve seen before and it all meshes together into a game that will not be forgotten. On the technical level, EA has pushed the PSP to its limits (I assume, because if this isn’t “the edge” of the PSP’s hardware capabilities then we’ve got a miracle device on our hands). Sound-wise, the Pocket Traxx feature is second to none. Enough with the senseless praise, let’s get down to business.
This is the best-looking PSP game I’ve played (as of the writing of this review). While it doesn’t look QUITE as polished as its console counterparts, it looks worlds better than SSX Tricky and SSX 3 on consoles… and that’s saying a lot.
The game looks like a great-looking PS2 game, which completely blows my mind. You can’t even see the polygon edges on the courses, and the courses are packed with stuff. Excellent.
The best soundtrack on the PSP easily. If you like Rock instead of gangster rap, EA finally answered your prayers. Sure, there’s plenty of lesser hip-hop and a few other genres, but for the most part you’re getting a rock star treatment with SSX On Tour.
SSX On Tour plays pretty much the same as the other SSX games, but the control on the PSP version is a bit quirky and takes a while to get used to. To be fair, if you haven’t played SSX games for a while ANY SSX game will feel strange.
You have a slew of options, like single races and tournaments. The menu system, with its distinct rock art flair, carries the game fairly well. You’ll unlock riders as you complete challenges and there’s always the classic “collect the symbols” missions that exist in every SSX game.
